The Power or Friendship: What Decades of Research Reveal

It’s easy to overlook the profound impact that connection has on our mental and physical well-being. Especially when the people closest to us are often the ones who challenge us the most…

The Harvard Study of Adult Development, which is one of the longest-running studies on human development, has followed over 700 individuals for more than 85 years. Its findings reveal that close relationships are the key to a long and healthy life. Dr. Robert Waldinger, the study’s director, emphasizes that “taking care of your body is important, but tending to your relationships is a form of self-care too” (news.harvard.edu).

The Harvard study found that individuals with warm, nurturing relationships in their 50s were healthier at 80. These connections act as buffers against life’s challenges, promoting resilience and overall well-being. It’s not about the number of friends you have, but the depth of those friendships. Meaningful connections — built on trust, empathy, and mutual support. These deep bonds foster a sense of belonging, purpose, and joy.

Friendships, no doubt, can be challenging. But they are among the strongest influences on our health and happiness. That’s why it’s so valuable to connect with and care for one another, to open up, check in, and offer support. Of course, there’s a natural limit to the number of close connections we can manage, as they take time and attention. So, simply spending time together and valuing these bonds enriches our lives.

At Vivre Retreats, we celebrate the power of friendship. Our retreats provide a space for women to connect, reflect, and grow together. Whether you attend with a close friend or make new connections, the shared experiences at our retreats strengthen bonds that nourish the heart, lift the spirit, and contribute to a more fulfilling life.

On that note… three women who met at one of our retreats have just booked a holiday together! Moments like these fill our hearts with joy and remind us of the incredible bonds that can form when women come together to connect, create, and simply be.

Sometimes we need extra support to notice the small joys around us. I love resources like:

  • All about love by Bell Hooks – provides a profound exploration of love in its many forms, including platonic friendships, challenging readers to reconsider societal norms and embrace love as an intentional act.

An artist and illustrator, Rebecca observes the world around her and presents us with joyful, welcoming scenes. Her work often features the South West Coast path, introducing characters and stories that feel familiar yet distinctive

Join us on our next retreat and experience how simple, mindful rituals — sharing meals, walking in nature, creating together, and resting — can strengthen the bonds of friendship. Just as September invites us to soften into change, our retreats offer space to slow down, connect deeply with others, and celebrate the joy of companionship. It’s not about escape, but about returning to yourself and your friendships with a renewed sense of connection and balance.
